AS Monaco win the clash in Marseille with character
AS Monaco traveled to Marseille this Sunday evening at the end of the 27th day of Ligue 1. A shock that ended with a major success for the Red and Whites (1-0), which repaid six points of their evening opponent.
For the first time in Ligue 1 since the 2016-2017 season, AS Monaco won at the Vélodrome! For this poster against OM, Philippe Clément decides to field an eleven arranged in 4-4-2, with in particular the return to central defense of Benoît Badiashile, who has not appeared since his injury in Nantes on January 9, and that of Jean Lucas, who was suspended this week for the semi-final of the Coupe de France, on the right side of the midfield.
Solid Reds and Whites
The first quarter of an hour is quite closed. The Marseillais have possession of the ball but are not really dangerous, since Milik does not fit his provisional (9and) and Guendouzi’s strike lacks power to worry Alexander Nübel (14and). The German goalkeeper is however working to repel a shot from the left of Rongier (21and) and Benoît Badiashile intervenes in extremis in front of Bakambu (33and) to preserve this score of 0-0 until the break.
Gelson Martins extinguished the Velodrome
After a first act during which they endeavored to remain very compact, the Red and Whites attack the second in a more conquering way and press higher. Their efforts were rewarded just before the hour mark when Gelson Martins, on the lookout after a shot on the post from Kevin Volland, pushed the ball deep and opened the scoring (0-1, 58′).

The German striker is close to being decisive again a few moments later, but his cross is a little too long for Wissam Ben Yedder (61and). This will not prevent Philippe Clément’s men from continuing to undermine the Olympian defense, without however managing to score the goal of the break. Not serious, because the victory is well at the end and allows AS Monaco to come back to six points from 3and place, occupied by his evening opponent!
Make way for the Europa League!
The next meeting of the Red and Whites will be another shock, this time European, since they will travel to Braga on Thursday (9 p.m.) in 8and first leg of the Europa League. A poster that will precede another against a direct competitor in the league, next Sunday in Strasbourg (3 p.m.).
