AS Monaco: match notes
After the fine victory of OGC Nice against Paris Saint-Germain in the last moments (1-0), Olympique de Marseille had to win at home against AS Monaco in order to continue their race for second place. . And after his last defeat at home against Clermont (0-2), the Olympians wanted to return to success in front of their home crowd and forced Nubel to succeed from the start. First in front of Guendouzi (14th), then in front of Rongier (22nd). Like this shot off target by Payet (27th), the Marseillais lacked precision and took a first warning after a counter-attack converted by Lucas, but the Monegasque was finally offside for a few millimeters (42nd).
An opportunity that perked up the ASM, much more enterprising in the second half. And the second occasion of the party was the right one for the Rock players. Well served by Ben Yedder, Volland found himself in the area and could eliminate Peres to hit… directly on Lopez’s right post. Behind, the ball returned to Martins, who could conclude at close range (1-0, 52nd). A thunderclap at the Velodrome. Unable to come back to the score at the end of the match, OM (3rd) therefore conceded a third game in a row without a win and relaunched the race for the podium before going to Brest. Lyon, Lille, Nantes, Strasbourg and Rennes can believe it, like Monaco (8th) who will be able to confirm their good evening success against the RCSA, during the next day.
Olympic Marseille
-
P. Lopez (4): not really worried during the first 45 minutes, except on the goal of Jean Lucas finally signaled in an offside position, the Spanish goalkeeper did not have much more work after returning from the locker room. But after being saved by his post, he saw Gelson Martins, forgotten by his defense, crucify him (59th). Otherwise, and as often, he was content to provide a good solution for the recovery by playing very high on the ground. Frustrating.
-
Rongier (3.5): in this 4-4-2 diamond or 4-2-3-1 by Jorge Sampaoli, the former Nantes player had a lot of trouble at the start of the game with several lost balls and approximate transmissions. Even if he was able to do a little better afterwards, the 27-year-old player never knew how to bring real more to OM, even when he played a little more in the midfield after the match. opener for AS Monaco. Author of a heavy strike released by Nübel in the first period (22nd). Replaced by Lirola (80th) which was not distributed in the right lane.
-
Saliba (6): despite this negative result for the Marseille club, the defender on loan from Arsenal delivered a great performance overall. Solid in the central hinge and often a step ahead, he multiplied the decisive interventions in the last meters (19th, 45th + 1, 49th, 67th, 71st). Unfortunately, his match was tarnished by this small careless mistake where he gave Gelson Martins a head start on the Monegasque goal.
-
Caleta-Car (4.5): gives much less visibility than his teammate in the axis of the defense, the Croatian giant had less work. We saw him much more after the break and he quickly distinguished himself with a very important double intervention as the last defender (55th). Note that on the Monegasque goal, he came out on the ball carrier but with little aggression.
-
Luan Peres (3): still present on the left side of the defense, but this time much more stuck to the touchline, the Brazilian took over very well with a big tackle on Jean Lucas (6th). Unfortunately, as the game progressed, the Olympian summer rookie suffered, first taking a yellow card before being put in difficulty on the ASM goal and Volland’s first strike on the post (59th). A match to forget for a player who is sometimes mounted but who lacked accuracy in his last transmissions. Replaced by Kolasinac (80th) who played very high but his few crosses gave nothing.
-
Kamara (6.5): what about the performance of the 22-year-old player? At the end of the contract in a few months, the Marseille midfielder razed everything in the midfield by doing the windshield wiper, especially in the first period when he had notably won 6 out of 7 duels. With always important interventions (3rd, 35th, 48th), the native of Marseilles did a lot of good for OM but could not avoid the defeat of his team.
-
Guendouzi (4.5): always with a large volume of play, the former player of Hertha Berlin has remained on his line by multiplying the races whether in defense or in the Monegasque camp. He even gave the asemists a few scares with a shot on target (14th) and a center shot off target (73rd) but his match was not called good. The player on loan from the Gunners has accustomed us to much better midfield, and the tactical set-up may have disturbed him.
-
Gerson (5.5): in a new role, a little more in the right lane, the Brazilian midfielder was the master of the Marseille game with Payet. From start to finish, he showed great technical accuracy and was quite interesting playing simple. However, in the areas of truth, the former element of Flamengo lacked precision but his fairly successful performance suggests good things for the rest of the season.
-
Payet (5): lined up behind the Milik-Bakambu duo on paper, the Olympian number 10 has evolved much more on the left side. Very often sought after by his partners, he was still the one who dictated the pace on the Marseille side but once again, this little grain of madness seems to have disappeared and the captain of OM did not make the difference despite a heavy strikes above in the first period (27th).
-
Milik (3.5): Lined up alongside Bakambu at the forefront of the attack, the Pole was often found with his back to goal, but the Monegasques muzzled him rather well. We then expected him in the area but the 28-year-old center forward did not first remove the frame on two whims (32nd, 52nd). Number 9 clearly needs to do much better.
-
Bakambo (3): More often sought after in depth than his Polish partner, the Congolese international ran a lot in the first period but he too often made the wrong choice, as during this incursion before the break (33rd). Not sharp and decisive, he gave way to Dieng for the first change of Jorge Sampaoli (65th). The recent African Cup of Nations winner tried to disrupt the Monaco defense with deep calls, to no avail.
AS Monaco
-
Nubel (6): the goalkeeper on loan from Bayern Munich to ASM won a rather serious match. He captured the ground shot from Guendouzi (14th) and made a good save on the shot from Rongier (21st). Rather good in the long game (10/16), he was also present in the air but was ultimately only rarely worried.
-
Henry (5): the Monegasque right-back had a decent game. He won 4 of his 9 duels, and was rather precise in his passes with 75% success and in his crosses. But he also lost a few too many balls (17). Otherwise, he took over Payet’s center which was heading towards Guendouzi (10th).
-
Badiashile (6.5): the young central defender (20 years old) delivered a good performance. He has often been at the reception of Marseille centers, such as those of Payet (3rd) and Peres (11th). He also made a good outing to counter the strike from Guendouzi (21st). Trying to offer the long game (3/6), he allowed his team to stand out with his cleanliness in the transmissions (1 missed short pass). Replaced by Matsima (78th).
-
Disasi (7): Like his central defense partner, the former Rémois put in a good performance. Present in the recovery as when he came out well in front of Milik (25th) or that he protected the ball well in front of Guendouzi (35th), he also tried to lengthen the game, with however variable success (5/8 ). Warned in the 56th minute.
-
Vanson (7): the Brazilian right-back was the author of a good copy against the Olympians. Active in his lane, he defended well on the cross from Payet (2nd) and well followed on Bakambu in the middle (37th) but also tried to offer up front, through long play or crosses, even if the latter were not always sharp (0/4). The former Gremio player showed that he was also present in the duel since he won the majority of those he disputed (9/13), as during a good comeback on Dieng (65th).
-
Chuameni (6): the young French midfielder was quite good defensively but his tactical positioning did not allow him to bring on the offensive plan. Very good in duels, since he won 8/11 and very precise in his transmissions, the player trained at the Girondins de Bordeaux was also important in the recovery and construction of his team, especially in the second half.
-
Fofana (5): ASM’s number 22 was not the most prominent among his teammates. Not comfortable in duels (3/8), he was not very sharp in recovery either. He didn’t touch many balls and lost a lot of them, but he was present in his team’s pressing. He tried his luck from outside the area, without finding the target (83rd).
-
John Lucas (4.5): the Brazilian who worked for OL did not perform very well against OM. From the start, he was well picked up on his acceleration on the side (5th), before more or less disappearing even if he thought he opened the score before being flagged offside just a little (42nd) . Not necessarily very prominent with the ball, he was still in tune with his teammates in terms of defensive response and involvement.
-
Martins (5.5): the Monegasque evening striker put in a good performance, he was serious in his defensive tasks, making 4 tackles and winning 9 of his 13 duels. Offensively, he was successful in his dribbling (3/3) and he found himself in the right place after Volland’s post to unblock the situation and give victory to ASM (59th). Replaced by Diop (78th).
-
Volland (5.5): the German center forward had a complicated evening at the start, taking time to get into his match. Being often well framed by Saliba or Kamara, he lost most of his duels but when he managed to stand out in the area, he could have scored the opener if his shot had not ended on the post after the nice pass from Ben Yedder (59th). No regrets since Gelson Martins took the opportunity to finish the job. Replaced by Bodu (78th).
-
Ben Yedder (6): the Monegasque captain had a good match. His first half, like his team, was more complicated but he then managed to raise the level. Author of a pass for Volland which could have been Decisive on the opener of Gelson Martins, he was not always precise in his transmissions (76%) but he was one of the Monegasque players responsible for the his team’s best face in the second half. Replaced by Golovin (87th).
