LXVII COSAC: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia in a joint statement call on Member States to grant Ukraine EU candidate status

March 5 The plenary session of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees on Union Affairs (COSAC) LXVII in the National Assembly of the French Republic continues. The Conference on the Future of Europe (COFE) focused on Ukraine.
At the COSAC plenary session, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will sign a joint statement welcoming the solidarity of the EU Member States and institutions and their united response to the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and support for the Ukrainian people. Member States are invited to Ukraine’s EU candidate status and a clear and firm prospect of EU membership.
At the COSAC meeting, the delegations of the Member States endorsed the statement made by the Troika on the attack on Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
Matas Maldeikis, a member of the European Affairs Committee, said: “Putin is not at war with Ukraine, Ukraine is only an episode. Putin is at war with us, with our values, with the West, with our freedom and with our way of life. Ukrainians are fighting for the opportunity to live freely, they realize that most of them will die on the front line, but they are dying for the dream that their children will live free in Europe. I want to encourage everyone, give them the hope they need. “
President of the European Commission in the debate on COFE Ursula von Der Lejen (Ursula von der Leyen), Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Democracy and Demography, Chair of the Executive Board of the Conference on the Future of Europe Dubravka Šuica emphasized the importance of citizen involvement in decision-making in democratic processes, especially at this joyous time for the whole of Europe and Ukraine.
In the current context, it is even more important to prepare the EU for the challenges of the future in the framework of COFE, “the Western Balkans cannot remain a black hole” and the Eastern Partnership needs to be redefined.
Member of the European Parliament, Co – President of COFE Gaius Verhostadas Mr Verhofstadt emphasized that the European Parliament and national parliaments must work together to ensure that citizens’ suggestions are heard and implemented.
Conference on the future of Europe to end in 2022 May 9 The Czech Republic and Hungary are ready to ensure the implementation of the COFE recommendations during their presidencies.
COSAC (Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs) is a conference of members of the European Affairs Committees of the national parliaments of the Member States of the European Union and of the European Parliament. It is a six-monthly forum that can adopt any proposal to the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission. This conference encourages the exchange of information and best practices between national parliaments and the European Parliament.
