“We lacked success”, the coach of AS Monaco looks back on the defeat in the Coupe de France
You are on a difficult series (elimination in the Coupe de France, a defeat and two draws in the league). Do you feel any pressure ahead of Sunday’s game in Marseille?
No, because the leaders have seen our last matches. We lacked success in the results. In our last four games, we could have won 9 points in the league and qualified for the Cup final. It didn’t, but everyone sees the work done every day in training.
We still have the impression that AS Monaco is missing its season…
There are still 12 Ligue 1 games, a third of the championship. Naturally, every game is important, but after our games against Lens, Lyon and Amiens (3 wins), everyone was enthusiastic. There hasn’t been a big change since, there are things that have been more positive in the game, but the success was not there, with two goals against our camp, which is exceptional, two red cards . .. In our last four games, we’ve had more possession and more chances than our opponents. We still have to work and if the players keep the same enthusiasm, the same desire, we will reap the rewards. I’m sure of that.
The supporters are disappointed with the season, what do you have to say to them?
That the players give their maximum every day. Football is not a playstation game. It’s important now not to get nervous. The players must maintain this same dynamic. I’m not saying everything was perfect, but the content was better than the results. Of course, on a desire to win our matches.
The match in Marseille, 8 points ahead, can be crucial for the Champions League…
There are still 33 points to take after this match, but we must do our best to take the three points.
What are the reasons why you think you can win at the Vélodrome?
It’s a tough game, they are second, won the first game here against Monaco 0-2. It’s a big challenge, but I feel that everyone has a lot of desire to do it and return luck to our side.
