On March 3-5, Arminas Lydeka, Deputy Chairman of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs, Aurelijus Veryga, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Domas Griškevičius and Matas Maldeikis, members of the Committee, chair the LXVII Plenary Session of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC).
March 4 Europe’s recovery and exit from the crisis, climate change and the transition to clean energy continue to be discussed in the sessions.
Mr Maldeikis congratulated the French Presidency on pursuing the ambitious goals of economic recovery and resilience towards a sustainable economic recovery in the EU. The active French press is important for Lithuania. “As our economies recover, it is time to think about economic policies that promote coordinated growth, and it is therefore important that I can now review the economic governance framework. “Long-term fiscal sustainability” should be a key objective of the review of fiscal rules, but sustainability should be “Communicated in a way that is conducive to economic growth”. We need to go beyond short-term measures and take long-term measures to stimulate supply, boost investment, facilitate labor market transformations geared to a green and digital economy, while preventing the consolidation of unemployment. Jean Monnet has said that Europe will be born into crises and will be the solution to those crises. “We have shown that in a crisis, the European Union is capable of being united and capable of taking swift and effective action,” said the politician.
Committee member D. Griškevičius said that the Russian aggression and the war caused by it had shocked the Western world, which reacted quickly, decisively and in solidarity. “But is that enough? No. Europe is still too dependent on Russian gas and oil. Let us not be naive – addictions to get rid of them will cost and affect everyone, but we must do so as soon as possible and move to a green course. “Not only will we save a healthier planet, our freedom and the values of the West, but at the same time we will stop funding war machines,” the politician emphasized. He also stressed the need to speed up the synchronization of the Baltic electricity networks with the continental European network. “Europe and Lithuania must rely on reliable energy sources. We must not leave Ukraine in energy isolation and have helped to connect its electricity grid to Europe. The Western world, and not only him, must maintain solidarity, but not limit itself to acceptable decisions on sanctions, ”the Lithuanian representative urged.
