Nutrition and cancer: what are their links?
Today Dr Gerard Bersand explore the links between nutrition and the appearance of certain cancers. Several studies have indeed demonstrated the role of diet. Obviously, multiple causes can be at the origin of the appearance and development of cancer. We find, for example, genetic predispositions. Many cancers are also caused or favored by external factors. We can cite smoking, alcohol consumption, poor physical activity, UV exposure but also an unbalanced diet.
Nutrition and cancer: close links!
Before going into detail, it is important to remember that a particular food alone cannot prevent the development of the disease! It is rather a question of balancing one’s consumption by favoring what protects and by absorbing what can contribute to the appearance of cancer (alcoholic drinks, overweight or obesity)
Thus, the consumption of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of developing several cancers (stomach, mouth, or esophagus). Indeed, they contain a wide variety of components beneficial to our health such as fibers, antioxidants or even vitamins and minerals. Hence the famous phrase: “Eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day”. However, this recommendation does not include nuts, seeds, dried fruits or potatoes.
You can also focus on foods rich in fiber. It is found in large quantities in whole foods such as bread, pasta or rice.
In addition to food, it is advisable to practice at least 30 minutes of physical activity of intense to high intensity every day. In children and adolescents, this recommendation increases to 60 minutes per day.
