Ukraine cannot negotiate at gunpoint
Ukraine is unable to properly negotiate with Russia when the Russian military is shelling.
According to a Ukrinform correspondent, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie announced this on CBC.
“We are aware of the importance of diplomacy, but at the same time Ukraine cannot negotiate when, to put it mildly, a weapon is attached to its head,” Jolie said.
She also noted that the words of official Moscow do not correspond to Russia’s actions. “I am very confused by the difference between what Russia has said in recent weeks and how it has happened. We will wait and see (what the negotiations will lead to – ed.). I always prefer diplomacy, “the minister said.
As Ukrinform reported, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations held the first round of peace talks on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border on Sunday. However, concrete decisions could not be reached and it was decided to meet again soon.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops are killing civilians, shelling and destroying key infrastructure, and missiles hit Ukrainians’ homes.
Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, with the support of all the people, courageously resist aggression.
Ukraine has officially filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation in the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague. International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan has launched an investigation into the situation in Ukraine.
