AS Monaco concedes a cruel defeat against Reims
AS Monaco received the Stade de Reims this Sunday for the 26th day of Ligue 1. However, the dominant Red and Whites unfortunately lost at the very end of the match (1-2).
The positive dynamic stops. By losing to Reims (1-2), this Sunday afternoon at the Stade Louis-II, the Red and Whites failed to chain a 6and consecutive meeting without defeat, in all competitions. Nor to put the forward movement in the league, after two consecutive draws against Lorient (0-0) and Bordeaux (1-1).
Monaco entrance push
For this meeting, Philippe Clément must in particular do without Aurélien Tchouameni and Caio Henrique, suspended. They are replaced position for position by Youssouf Fofana and Ismail Jakobs in the now classic 4-1-4-1. Two changes that do not disturb the Monegasques, who attack the game hard and even believe they open the scoring, but Gelson Martins’ headed goal is disallowed for offside (6and).

Gelson with a header finds the net but is apparently flagged offside… 😞

Alexander Nübel releases everything
After this great opportunity, Monaco did not let go of its grip on the game, but the shots from Ismail Jakobs (16and) and Jean Lucas (18and) are deflected. Reims then grew bolder and proved dangerous on the counterattack. Fortunately, Alexander Nübel is perfectly vigilant on the attempts of Maxime Busi (17and), Azor Matusiwa (30and) and especially in front of Mitchell Van Bergen who presented himself alone against him (31and). Wissam Ben Yedder replies correctly but his powerful shot is released by Predrag Rajkovic (32and).
The 3500and but Club in the elite for “Captain Wissam”
After this goalless first act, the second period started with a big thrill as Fraser Hornby, found in the area, saw his shot pushed back by the crossbar (48and)! But it was AS Monaco who found the fault with a superb action concluded by Wissam Ben Yedder. Found in the area by Sofiane Diop, the captain strikes in pivot and registers his 15and but this season in Ligue 1 (1-0, 55and). A symbolic achievement, since it is the 3500and of the club in the elite.

The top scorer in Ligue 1 is even close to a double a few moments later, but his instant recovery from a corner ends his race on the post (58and). This opening of the score in any case frees the men of Philippe Clément, who are again close to the break on a slalom in the surface of Jean Lucas (67and), on a header from Axel Disasi (75th), then another attempt from the Brazilian midfielder (81st).
A cruel ending
Despite a superb save by Alexander Nübel in front of Nathanaël Mbuku (83rd), this match finally ended in defeat. The unfortunate Kevin Volland first scores against his camp with a header (1-1, 83rd), then this same Mbuku comes to score against after stoppage time (1-2, 90th + 3), against Monegasques reduced to ten after the expulsion of Jean Lucas (88th).
AS Monaco will now attack a dantesque month of March, which will begin on Wednesday (9:15 p.m.) with a trip to Nantes in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. A big meeting that will precede another, this time in Ligue 1, with a clash in Marseille next Sunday (8:45 p.m.).
