The last regular season game takes the Bulls to Villach
© Sports report
On Sunday, the last round in the regular round of the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League 2021/22 will take place. EC Red Bull Salzburg is still a guest once in Villach and meets the current runners-up in the table, which means that Salzburg, who have been the winners of the regular season for two rounds, still have a real test before the playoff quarter-finals start on March 9th.
While the Red Bulls are already the winners of the regular season and have already secured their CHL ticket for next season, EC GRAND Immo VSV is still concerned with defending its current second place in the last round – which could be in the event of a defeat Club still be pushed to third place by table neighbor Hydro Fehérvár AV19 – and thus also qualify for the premier class.
Irrespective of that, the game in Villach is definitely a strong indicator for the playoffs that start on March 9th, as two of the best teams of the last few weeks meet. The Red Bulls may have won all three of their previous matches of the season – the last on January 28 in Villach 4-2 – but they are once again preparing for a very tough encounter, as the blue-whites have recently won 10 of 11 games ( !) and probably go into the encounter with a lot of self-confidence.
Salzburg’s head coach Matt McIlvane will start with a younger team in Villach, but will see improvements after yesterday’s 5-4 home win against Innsbruck: “There was a bit of everything. We played well, but also created chances. We scored really good goals, but then let them down again. In the end, a good defensive performance was enough to win, but we saw again that we still have room for improvement.”
The young Danjo Leonhardt will win in Villach: “The standings don’t matter. We always want to perform at our best and keep preparing for the playoffs. And best of all beat Villach again.”
In addition to a few established players who have played a lot recently and will be rested tomorrow, the Red Bulls will again be without the convalescents Ali Wukovits, Peter Hochkofler, Florian Baltram and Lukas Schreier in Villach. In return, some Red Bull Hockey Juniors players will get their chance to prove themselves in the local top league. The game will be streamed live on Live.ice.hockey.
