70,645 absentee ballots issued for the Tyrol election
On Sunday there will be elections in 273 of 277 Tyrolean municipalities. More than half a million citizens are entitled to vote.
The number of absentee ballots issued for the Tyrolean municipal council and mayoral elections has risen sharply compared to 2016. 70,645 voting cards were issued for the election on Sunday, so six years ago it was far less than half as many – namely 27,542. Polls are pending in 273 of the 277 municipalities, 856 lists and 562 mayoral candidates are standing for election. According to the state, 505,423 citizens are eligible to vote.
A total of 625 polling stations will be set up in the 273 municipalities. The majority of them open at 7 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. – even in the more populous municipalities and district capitals. To are awarded 3,650 mandate. In 40 municipalities there is only one candidate list, in 113 (mainly smaller) municipalities there is only one candidate for mayor. On March 13th, mayoral run-off elections will then take place in those places where no candidate has achieved an absolute majority right away.
>>> The pandemic election: The small world in which the federal government holds its rehearsal?
Local council elections are taking place in Tyrol this Sunday. It is the first time that more than 500,000 people have gone to the polls after allegations of corruption against the ÖVP, after the departure of Sebastian Kurz and after the introduction of compulsory vaccination. How much will they use this opportunity for a federal political memo?
There will be no elections this year in the provincial capital of Innsbruck. There, the next regular election in 2024 is on the political calendar. The community of Matrei am Brenner (district of Innsbruck-Land) will only vote on March 20 after a community merger (with Mühlbachl and Pfons). The citizens of the municipality of Wängle in the Ausserfern had already gone to the polls on January 9th, since the municipal council there had decided to dissolve it in October. And in Musau – also in the Reutte district – there was no election proposal.
