New exit on A14 near Dornbirn in operation – Liechtenstein
Dornbirn – The Vorarlberg Autobahn A14 has one more junction. The new Dornbirn-Süd exit with a direct road connection to the exhibition center was opened on Friday morning. The road project costs around 42.4 million euros.
The new motorway junction bears the name Dornbirn-Süd and is intended to relieve the urban areas of Dornbirn and Hohenems from heavy traffic in particular, according to a statement from the state of Vorarlberg. In addition to the planned reduction in traffic of at least 600 trucks per day, the companies based in the surrounding commercial areas will in future be able to access the autobahn directly without a long detour.

Provincial Councilor Marco Tittler, as the responsible economic and road construction consultant, speaks of a “key transport policy project for Vorarlberg”. In the picture presented, the new junction and road connection to the exhibition center will bring significant relief to the southern areas of the city and Lustenauerstrasse. “At the same time, an attractive option has emerged here to bypass the city area via the autobahn and the Lastenstrasse; for example from the south of the city to the north or vice versa,” added Mayor Andrea Kaufmann.
No direct connection from Bregenz to Switzerland
Although the new motorway junction is an alleged full connection, there are restrictions, in particular to stop transit traffic from Switzerland towards Germany and vice versa. In order to prevent additional traffic in the Swiss towns near the border, it is not possible to turn off in the direction of Switzerland when coming from Bregenz. Conversely, it will not be possible to drive onto the autobahn from the roundabout near the Swiss border in Schmitter in the direction of Bregenz.
Major project worth millions
The opening of the motorway junction and the new additional measures are more than four years of construction. The 1.5-kilometer L39 Lastenstraße (“An der Fuhr”), which connects the new motorway junction with the exhibition center, was opened to traffic in mid-December 2021. The upgraded Bleichestrasse was opened a year earlier to provide a direct connection to the Wallenmahd, Bobletten and Unter- and Oberklien operating areas. In the previous year, parallel to the construction of the L39, the Schweizerstrasse L45 bordering on the Bleichestrasse was widened to the junction and the underpass under the A14 was widened for the turning lanes onto the motorway entrances. At the same time, the two pairs of ramps were erected by ASFINAG.
New cycle path connections
The major project is also accompanied by new cycle path connections. The cycle path along the Dornbirner Bleichestrasse to the Schweizerstrasse has already been realised. A decision by the State Administrative Court is still pending for the section of the cycle route along Schweizerstrasse that is still missing. Construction is currently underway on the bicycle crossing over the Rheintal inner canal and the work for the new cycle path from the new Dornbirn-Süd motorway junction along the A14 to the Rheintal inner canal is about to go out to tender.
In addition, the construction work included numerous measures to protect the settlement areas and the natural landscape, such as the construction of a noise protection dam, the use of a low-noise road surface or the renaturation of ditches.
