This is a large-scale project that is taking place at Fauga. Since June 22, 2021, depollution operations have been underway on former military land in this town located south of Toulouse.
The place served as a storage place for ammunition during the Second World War at the National Company of Powders and Explosives (SNPE). This land of 49 hectares today belongs to the company Solveo Énergie.
Ammunition destroyed every Thursday
During the first phase of the depollution site, which consisted of clearing brush, marking out and securing the site, numerous munitions of small calibers have been discovered. These must be destroyed.
For this, the town hall of Fauga, the prefecture of Haute-Garonne and the interdepartmental demining center of Toulouse inform the inhabitants of the town that the destruction of these munitions will take place on Thursday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. “No evacuation of the population is required to destroy these small-caliber ammunition”, specify the services of the State.
“If supplied high-capacity ammunition is discovered, it would not be occupied at a location but remarkable at a specialized site. In the event that their transfer is not possible, an evacuation of the population may be necessary. If necessary , the inhabitants and residents concerned will be informed in advance of the practical arrangements by the town hall of Fauga”.
A project that will last almost 3 years
It is the State, by decision of the Court of Appeal of Bordeaux, which is responsible for cleaning up the site.
“The pyrotechnic clearance operations are piloted by the interdepartmental demining center of Toulouse, which reports to the Ministry of the Interior (general directorate of civil security and crisis management – DGSCGC)”, adds the prefecture which specifies that the the construction time is estimated at at least 30 months.
