Ice hockey: Salzburg takes first place in the dry
The KAC, on the other hand, is still in the middle of the crisis. The defending champions lost 1-0 at home to Znojmo on penalties, conceding their fifth defeat in a row. The beneficiary of the next KAC defeat in the fight for a place in the top six was Olimpija Ljubljana, who secured three points 4-2 at the Dornbirn Bulldogs and stayed in sixth place.
Only hundredths of a point separate the trio from Znojmo, Bozen and Klagenfurt in the table. After the fifth defeat in the series, but in the secret games, champions KAC, who recorded four shots at the pole against Znojmo, need not only victories but also luck to make the jump over the ominous line early into the quarter-finals.
Fehervar fixed in the quarterfinals
After Salzburg and VSV, the ticket for the play-off of the top six also came early on Tuesday, which also means a place in the quarter-finals. The Hungarians celebrated an unchallenged 4:2 home win over TIWAG Innsbruck Haie and thus moved up to third place and into the play-off field.
For Innsbruck, on the other hand, the chance of the pre-play-off, in which the clubs in seventh to tenth place to determine the remaining two quarter-finalists, was reduced. Because the Moser Medical Graz 99ers celebrated a clear victory with a 4:1 at home against Bozen in the fight for a place in the pre-play-off. The Haie need two wins and must hope for slips from Graz.
“Bulls” slow down capital letters
With the win in Vienna, Salzburg secured first place after the regular season. The “Bulls” pulled away decisively to 3:0 with a double strike from Ty Loney in the middle period (27th/29th). Even if the hosts didn’t give up, they could only shorten it. Despite the defeat against the leader of the table – the first four wins last – the Viennese are among the top six on the course and thus in the quarter-finals.
The VSV match against Pustertal went back and forth, neither team was able to pull away. The Villachers had to accept the equalizer on the debut of their Finnish goalie Tomi Karhunen after leading 3: 2 and 4: 3, thanks to goals from Travis Oleksuk (53rd) and Chris Collins (59th) with a shot into the orphaned goal The better ending in itself.
