Hungary has the most successful Winter Olympics behind it
The Olympic flame, which was ignited on February 4, went out, officially ending the XXIV. Winter Olympics, which was of historical significance to the Hungarians in several respects. For the first time in the history of the Winter Games, the Hungarian delegation won more than one medal and was able to collect twenty Olympic points for the first time.
At the closing ceremony, cross-country skier Ádám Kónya brought the Hungarian flag to the National Stadium. Of the Hungarian Olympians, only he is left in Beijing, and the figure skater Márk Magyar, who will only be able to return home on Monday after his previous positive coronavirus test.
Caj Csi, the head of the organizing committee, thanked all the contributors who offered for a successful settlement. As he said, he is proud of everyone who has dedicated himself to this, and at the same time highlighted that Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
Nearly 2,900 competitors from 91 countries, including 12 Hungarians, started in Beijing.
The Hungarians finished with one gold and two bronze medals through the short track speed skaters.
Liu Shaoang won the 500 meters, making him the first Hungarian individual winter Olympic champion. He finished third at 1000 meters and in the mixed relay. His brother, Sándor Liu Shaolin, John-Henry Krueger, Petra Jászapáti and Zsófia Kónya also ran in the latter. At 1,500 meters, Liu Shaoang was fourth, Liu Shaolin was sixth, as was the four-year champion men’s relay. Thus, for the first time in the history of the Winter Games, the Hungarian delegation earned more than one medal and was able to collect twenty Olympic points for the first time.
