German as a second language: New workshop in the House of Austrian History
Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of International Mother Language Day on February 21, when UNESCO commemorates the preservation and protection of cultural diversity, the House of Austrian History (hdgö) started a new workshop offer. It is aimed specifically at people aged 16 and over who are learning German as a second language and are attending basic education courses for this purpose. Group bookings are now available online on the museum’s website www.hdgoe.at possible.
hdgö is expanding its range of educational opportunities and has developed a new workshop with experts for German as a second language from the WUK construct and WUK.mpower projects. The title says it all: “What is Austria for you?” focuses on the personal perspective of the participants, shows various images of Austria and links them to the history of the last 100 years. At several thematic stations, the groups get to know the main exhibition of the Contemporary History Museum in easily understandable language. The mediators of the house connect events and special objects from history with the knowledge and questions of the participants.
“Each language is also a ticket to participate in the respective culture. With our new workshop, we invite people who are learning German as a second language to the museum and engage in an exchange on Austrian history and the present
“, says Monika Sommer, director of the hdgö. Eva Meran, head of the hdgö agency, adds: “In this workshop we avoid language barriers and consciously take the diversity of the groups into account. After answering our opening question “What is Austria for you?” we focus on relevant topics for the respective group.
“ These selected topics include elections and democracy, civil society and co-determination, tolerance and diversity, but also National Socialism and its consequences. Inquiries and bookings for groups can be made via the hdgö homepage: https://www.hdgoe.at/workshop_daz
“We see history education as the core task of our museum. With a look back, many of today’s developments become easier to understand. We make an active contribution to this with our wide range, which is now optimally supplemented by this new offer
“, says Monica Sommer.
The hdgö is interested in a wide range of educational opportunities available, digitally and in the museum. Extensive online offers and, specifically, free learning materials are available for teachers and students. The educational team has developed exciting themed workshops for children and young people between the ages of 6 and 19. Admission is free for everyone under the age of 19.
