The biggest trowel of the world is Belgian!
Ten trainees from Forem de Tournai and Nivelles broke the world record for the construction of the largest trowel of the world. This trowel giant, in the process of being approved by the Guinness World Records, will be exhibited in Rumes, in Tournaisis. It was on the initiative of the association of Rumes, “Gaston l’machon”, the giant from Rumes, that this project was launched. For a decade, the entity of Rumes has been nicknamed the “Country of Masons”. In fact, the working population in masonry in Rumes is much higher than the Walloon average. For eight years, the association had been looking for a partner to make this trowel, the mason’s basic tool. This is how it contacted Forem in December 2021. Three training centers have taken up this innovative educational challenge in order to make visible technical trades in demand for labour.
A brick in the belly
The Nivelles and Tournai training centers as well as the Forem Pigments Competence Center have joined forces to make the project a reality. Ten trainees, including two women, took up the challenge to highlight four trades in construction and industry that are understaffed: welding, carpentry, industrial painting and masonry. The Rumoise association having supplied the equipment, the welding trainees from Nivelles produced the blade (2.3m) and the metal part of the handle. The carpentry trainees from Tournai made the handle out of Belgian ash wood. Finally, the trowel will be designated to the trainees of the “Forem Pigments” center for the finishes intended to make it last over time (sandblasting, metallization and painting).

The trowel achieve (3.5m and 290kg) exceeds its French “little sister” by 10cm in length and 15cm in width. This construction tool is on the way to being included in the Guinness World Records which has already accepted the file. This trowel will now be exhibited in a public space within the Rumes entity. Until now this record was held by our neighbors the French, more particularly by the department of Moselle.
