Acquitted of sexual violence, march ‘in red’ in Ravenna
About a hundred peoplealmost all wearing something Red, participated in the morning in Ravenna to the procession organized by a dozen associations in support of women and against gender-based violence to “show indignation” about the recent resolution decision of two young men accused of group sexual assault on a drunk 18 year old. The procession started around 10 from the central Piazza del Popolo to arrive on the cycle path in front of the courthouse.
Several of the participants displayed signs with messages like “Solo yes is yes “,” y la culpa no era mia ni donde estaba ni como vestia“,” sex without consent is rape: the Supreme Court says so “,” because I did not report: because in addition to being immediately raped, I did not want a trial right away. “Regarding the story that has fueled much controversy so far, the two defendants were accused the first of having had the relationship with the 18-year-old drunk in an apartment in Ravenna and the other of having incited and filmed everything with a mobile phone.
The two – a 30-year-old of Romanian origin and a 31-year-old of Senegalese origin – were acquitted by the penal college of the Court of the city of Romagna “because the fact is not a crime”. The prosecutor had asked for nine years of imprisonment each.
The story dates back to the night between 5 and 6 October 2017 when the young woman, after having drunk several alcoholic drinks in a club, was carried on the shoulder to an apartment in the center where for the accusation she had been put under the shower and had then been abused on a sofa. The videos of those moments, following the complaint, had been seized by the police and the two boys had been sent to them by as many custody orders in prison. But already the Bologna Review Court, including the interpretation of the films, had released them, believing that the young woman, although “in a state of not full lucidity”, was “fully capable of authorizing valid consent to sexual intercourse“and he had expressed it. We are now awaiting the reasons for the as insolvency following which the Prosecutor will appeal.
