Bordeaux, game, captaincy, maintenance, David Guion takes stock – Girondins
David Guion, coach of the Girondins de Bordeaux, was in presentation from the auditorium of Matmut Atlantique this Friday morning. Accompanied by technical director Admar Lopes, he answered questions from journalists about his mission in Bordeaux and his state of mind.
First contacts with Bordeaux
“We had the first contact with Admar a few days ago. It happened quite quickly. I attended the match at Bollaert-Lens. I was well hidden. I saw a difficult first half hour. I saw players who reacted and who wanted to revive. Above all, I see a team that does not give up. That for me is important. I arrived during the week, I’m taking my first steps, and I’m discovering my entire squad very, very quickly.”
Exciting challenge.
It was obvious in relation to the club. Bordeaux is a prestigious and historic club. This mission seems made for me. I had a good feeling with President Gérard Lopez and with Admar as well. Being part of this sustaining mission is a difficult, exciting and exciting challenge for me. I want to take up this challenge and leave this club in the elite of French football, that’s its place.”
A group that is not dead
“Of course, there is work. The team is difficult, the players lack confidence. We have seen it in the last games, but I am motivated to bring my expertise and my experience to the players. I do not feel a group affected but who want to get up and get the club out of this position. I felt a lot of support and attention in my speech. I started collective and individual interviews. I see players concerned and aware of the situation.
I watched a lot of Girondins matches. You are aware that the team is suffering defensively. I am convinced that it is the story of a collective, a mentality, a state of mind of my players. We have started to work on this aspect. You also have to get to know your players and your environment to adjust and readjust. I have to make the team progress almost in a hurry.”
Quickly find balance
“Football is about balance. Continuing to perform well offensively, and helping the group defend and run together. I’m convinced that by defending well, you attack very well. It’s a daily job, and on one that has already started. There is a system that can be introduced quickly. Afterwards, I have to adapt to my squad. There is a balance to be found. I have to put it in place very quickly.
The idea is to adapt to the numbers we have. During my time at my last club, I ended up with 100 goals over the season in the first year. Afterwards, I always defended very well, but we played well. The players knew what had to be done. A coach always adapts to the means and the players at his disposal. It’s pragmatism.”
Why come without an assistant?
“I have to adapt quickly and learn about my environment. The club gave me the opportunity to come with an assistant. I had thought of Frédéric Bompard, whom I rubbed shoulders with in Reims. He had other objectives. After reflection, the best solution to go faster is to rely on internal resources. I saw an invested staff who know the players perfectly. This is the right solution. It will allow me to go faster on knowledge of the players and the team.”
Rémi Oudin and Josuha Guilavogui in relay?
“Rémi can be a witness to the workforce. I’ve known Rémi for quite some time. But I want him to focus on what he can do well. He is able to do better than what it currently does, particularly on efficiency.
I can really rely on him. I have a good feeling with Rémi. I knew Josuha well, whom I had at the Saint-Étienne training center, and meeting up 16 years later is a great anecdote. I know the value of man. These are boys that the Girondins should be proud to have in their squad, because they are good men and good footballers. They need to be able to thrive.”
The game and the captaincy
“For the captain, you will see on Sunday. For the moment I have not informed my locker room. It is important that the coach is relayed by leaders and leaders. I intend to rely on them. The locker room has boys with this profile. There is this notion of urgency and I will rely on a few boys to relay the messages.
The objective is clear and precise. My role as a leader is to federate around this objective. I want to come with as many people as possible. We need it. We must be united. Players need to feel supported to go for the wins.”
Point Emergencies
“Maintenance depends on results at home and victories. We have to be proud and have pride. We also have to Matmut to be very efficient and also outside as well. J I want to be myself and not play a role. I am convinced that this is the best way to convey your message. I hope this will help players to perform well on the lawn.
The main thing is Monaco. I’m totally focused on this Monaco match, that’s the only thing that drives me to provide my players with the tools and principles to perform on Sunday. We do not have time. You have to perform right away. From the first training, I set up what I want. We must succeed in bringing back points this Sunday.”
In our situation, all games are important, regardless of the opponent. I am totally focused and concentrated on this first deadline. We have to give the best of ourselves from Sunday.”
