The SÜDLICH(T)ER film series has attracted numerous evening visitors and schoolchildren to the Metropol cinema in Innsbruck over the past few months. With the series of films, the “World into Balance” initiative of the state of Tyrol addresses the challenges for people in the Global South. The kick-off event took place in September 2021 – until June 2022, in compliance with the applicable regulations, a total of ten films will be shown on a Thursday evening and the following day for school groups. After the screenings, there will be film talks with directors, activists or experts. The next film screening will be on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 7 p.m. The multilingual documentary “Woman” will be shown.
“With the SÜDLICH(T)ER series, we want to draw attention to urgent problems of our time and raise awareness of global connections and injustices. This includes climate change as well as negative developments in food production, the textile industry or children’s and women’s rights,” says LHS Deputyin Ingrid Philip. “We are very pleased that the film screenings so far have met with an interested audience, which has also critically examined it in the subsequent film talks. Tyrol may play a small role in international cooperation – but we do play a role: Locally and globally, the contribution of each and every individual to sustainable development is therefore decisive,” says the person responsible for development cooperation LHS Deputyin.
Film screenings with a varied supporting programme
The film series opened on September 23, 2021 with the documentary “Congo Calling” by director Stephan Hilpert, who is also available for the subsequent film discussion in the cinema hall. “’Congo Calling’ was a nice choice to open SÜDLICH(T)ER. It’s a very impressive and moving film that takes a critical look at development aid.” LHS Deputyin Felipe, who attended the opening event. A particularly large number of visitors attended the evening screening of the film “10 billion – How do we all get fed?” – a film about the most important basics of food production and the future of food for the growing world population. The film screening was also attended by representatives of the Innsbruck Nutrition Council and the “feld” association, who distributed vegetable soups in glasses after the film discussion with director Thurn.
SÜDLICH(T)ER is accompanied by a supporting program in the upper secondary schools. For example, school materials are available for lessons in preparation for the film screenings. As part of a competition, schoolchildren are also invited to deal creatively with a topic after the film screening. “Films make content tangible, arouse interest and are door openers for in-depth study of certain topics. The SÜDLICH(T)ER film series and the associated pedagogical material offer a wonderful opportunity to work on current development aspects at school. Due to the variety of topics, this is possible in many different subjects – from geography to political education to languages - as well as interdisciplinary,” Beate Palfrader, Minister for Education, invites teachers and students to participate.
