Champions League: Bayern saves a draw in Salzburg

They want to win the Champions League, but first have to tremble about the quarter-finals: Bayern drew very late in the first leg in Salzburg – and revealed many inaccuracies.
The Austrians earned the 1:1 (1:0) in the first premier class knockout game through unbelievable commitment, while Bayern finally failed to create sufficient chances from their clear superiority, especially in the second round. In the end she would have quickly conceded the second goal in a counterattack before Kingsley Coman saved the draw seconds before the final whistle.
“Are the Bavarians a block on the leg”
“The result is difficult to classify. It wasn’t enough in the first half. Salzburg came up with dangerous counterattacks. We controlled it better in the second half. The team noticed that we wanted to win the game. That we did Can’t is the question. We have to get that on the pitch in every game. We’re not in a flow where it goes by itself. Everyone understood that,” said Joshua Kimmich afterwards.
Salzburg were a little disappointed: “In the end it feels like a defeat, but a 1-1 draw is something to be proud of. We’re ready for the next game. We’re greedy and a block on the leg for Bayern,” said Karim Adeyemi and Andreas Ulmer add: “It doesn’t feel so good right now. But with a little distance you can be proud.”
Again with five offenses
The Munich team went into the game again with an extremely offensive orientation, although they had lost 4-2 in the league at VfL Bochum. Behind Robert Lewandowski, Julian Nagelsmann again called on Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry – and Gnabry had the first big chance of the game.
Setback becomes trump
After ten minutes, the right winger danced out Salzburg’s Ulmer, keeper Philipp Köhn deflected the hard low shot, but just about the post. Shortly thereafter, RB had to cope with the first setback: striker Noah Okafor had to leave the field due to muscle problems.
But nine minutes later no one from Salzburg spoke of an alleged setback. Because Chikwubuike Adamu, who came on for Okafor, was apparently not on the Bayern defensive list so quickly: Served by the German international Adeyemi, Brenden Aaronson passed the ball on to Adamu, who with a perfectly timed flick from the edge of the penalty area by Sven Ulreich in the Bayern goal was no coincidence let.
Ulreich still under stress
And Salzburg continued to tease Bayern: Five minutes after the 1-0 goal, Aaronson completed a great attack, but this time Ulreich got his right hand on the ball. Munich were visibly integrated, didn’t get any more pressure in midfield and even suffered penalties the plus in ball possession. A counterattack was needed to come close to equalizing, but Sané, who was called up from the centre, narrowly missed the Salzburg goal (31′).
It was only in the last few minutes before the break that Munich put the hosts back on the defensive more consistently. Gnabry failed with two blocked shots, Coman’s header easily defused Köhn.
Bayern luck with the VAR

However, what continued through the entire first half: Bayern kept throwing themselves out of rhythm through lack of concentration and unclean passes. Shortly before the break, the integrated avenged itself again: Niklas Süle followed a throw-in too short and Benajmin Pavard came too late, so that Adeyemi was able to sprint the ball. Pavard then touched him in the penalty area, but referee Michael Oliver and the VAR were not enough for a penalty.
Too little – that remained the central theme of Bayern for a long time after the change of sides. Too little precision, too little team play, actions that weren’t thought through enough and combinations of chances – surprisingly much was left to chance with the Munich team. In addition, Lewandowski was a total failure that evening.
Although Salzburg increasingly let themselves be pushed into their own half, they showed outstanding commitment and celebrated for every tackle or throw-in.
Köhn sometimes in luck
And they also ask for their luck: In the 72nd minute, the ever-improving Coman nibbled on the RB defense, but with a lot of luck, Köhn parried his shot into the near corner and only narrowly prevented an own goal. The equalizer was due a quarter of an hour before the end, but again Köhn was there first against Sané and then against Gnabry.
Ten minutes before the end, Bayern were in the doldrums: Adeyemi failed after a counterattack by Ulreich’s foot defence, Adamu’s follow-up shot was saved by Pavard for his already beaten keeper just before the line. When Salzburg were then unexpectedly allowed to dream of the sensation, Bayern struck: Müller extended a header, Coman sprinted into the ball on the second post and overtook Köhn into the near corner to make it 1-1.
