Jazz peak Oscar Peterson shines on “A Time for Love.”
The Oscar Peterson Quartet concluded its 1987 European tour with a stunning music evening in Helsinki.
The pianist / band leader was in perfect condition during the 12-piece set and led his awesome band – which included guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Dave Young and drummer Martin Drew – through one confusing number after another.
Peterson, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, initially focused on his original compositions, beginning with “Cool Walk” and then continuing with “Sushi,” “Love Ballade,” and “Cakewalk.” He followed with “A Salute to Bach,” then moved on to Johnny Mandel’s “A Time for Love,” Benny Goodman’s “Soft Winds,” Duke Ellington Medley (including “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”), and other treats. .
Jazz fans around the world can enjoy this magnificent performance – held on November 17, 1987 at the Culture House concert venue – now on Two Lions / Mack Avenue Records. has published “A Time for Love: The Oscar Peterson Quartet – Live in Helsinki”.
It’s almost a must-listen to any great jazz. But don’t just take our word for it. Instead, take a word from Benny Green, who writes so eloquently – and passionately – about the album in linear notes:
“This live recording of the Oscar at its epic peak is a time capsule of beauty sent from heaven, and a great addition to the jazz pantheon itself, a magnificent testimony to the music for which he honestly, humbly, and fearlessly ended his life in peace. A warrior, a hero to us all forever.”
