HELSINKI (AP) – Norway says it will remove almost all remaining COVID restrictions because it no longer sees a major health threat to citizens, although the omicron variant continues to spread in the Nordic countries.
“This is the day we have been waiting for,” Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said at a news conference in Oslo on Saturday. “We will eliminate almost all coronavirus measures.”
He justified the measure on the grounds that Norwegians are well protected by vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic and that the proportion of citizens admitted to hospital has remained low despite the spread of the omicron variant.
As of Saturday, Norwegians will no longer be required to wear masks in congested locations, and the one-meter (3-foot) distance rule will be removed. In addition, the isolation requirements will be dismantled and replaced by a recommendation that infected adults stay at home for four days.
In December, Norway was placed on a partial lock to limit the spread of the omicron transformation.
