Toulouse at the top of the French cities where traffic jams have decreased the most
Good news for Toulouse residents. According to thestudy conducted by operator TomTom, the pink city is one of the French municipalities where traffic jams have still not reached the pre-pandemic figures. Indeed, the “Annual traffic index” published by TomTom presents a comparative between traffic in 2019 and 2021. The results are positive for the pink city.
File français
With -18% congestion compared to 2019, Toulouse holds the record for the steepest drop in France, while national congestion has only decreased by 3% on average.
Logically, the urban congestion rate has increased compared to 2020 (+ 2%), while teleworking became widespread from March of that same year. However, the time lost by Toulouse users is 52h/year In Toulouse. The city ranks 13th position French municipalities in terms of time spent in traffic jams. At the top of the ranking, we find without surprise Paris, with 82 h/year of lost.
France, a bad European example
Toulouse’s performance is all the more impressive as the recovery in traffic is stronger in France than in most European countries. Indeed, with our Belgian, German or Italian neighbours, traffic jams have, for example, almost always remained lower than those of the pre-Covid period.
Of the 25 French cities analyzed in the TomTom report, seven saw their rate of cities higher than that of 2019, such as Marseille (+3% increase), Montpellier (+4%), Brest (+4%), Avignon (+ 6%) and Toulon (+14%).
Conversely, cities like Grenoble, Toulouse and Clermont-Ferrand saw their index remain significantly below that of 2019, and remain very close to that of 2020, an exceptionally low year due to lockdowns and travel restrictions. Encouraging news for our lungs, as pollution alerts followed one another in Toulouse.
