It is a phenomenon that we now know rather well. In 2021, it has been observed several times. But this is the first time of the year in 2022.
Screaming images this Friday morning
Friday February 11, the Saharan sand is back in the Pyrenees. Images shared by Weather Pyrenees have been glaring since this morning whether at Pas de la Casa, Superbagnères and Tourmalet.
This is the first time this year that the phenomenon has been observed.
Fine dust released into the atmosphere
In 2021, Vincent Guardresearcher at National Center for Meteorological Research (CNMR) explained to Toulouse News the origin of this strange phenomenon:
“It’s not the grains of sand that we know on our beaches. There is a phenomenon that happens with the wind in the great deserts of the Sahara and which produces dust that is a little finer than the usual grains of sand. This fine dust is more easily diffused into the atmosphere. At the moment, the weather conditions on site are causing a lot of emissions of this desert dust. Then there has to be the right weather flow. In short, the right wind system to get them from the Sahara to our home in France”.
