“At the Autofestival, people came to buy”
“We are more or less in line with our tests made at the beginning of last month: that it was not going to be an exceptional vintage, because the situation remained tense in terms of health, and that people are still thinking a lot in terms of engines” . Philippe Mersch, president of the Federation of automobile and mobility distributors (Fedamo), judges that the results of the 58th Autofestival which has just ended in Luxembourg are “rather correct, nothing more”.
Among the negative points, the non-existent festive aspect, Covid obliges, with no peak in attendance. It was still spread over two weeks, with a single Sunday, which resulted “in a continuous flow of visitors, from the first to the last day”. Although there is no official figures for orders, which vary according to the brands depending on the availability of vehicles and new products, but also delivery times, one observation is undeniable: “Customers who supply, was to buy. There were a lot of orders at the end of last year, this continued during the festival”, underlines Philippe Mersch.
Another observation is that electromobility continues to be emulated in the country. “People are interested in the issue. This does not mean that they change cars directly, but they take information”. The announcement of the extension of state aid for the purchase of electric vehicles after March 31, 2022 – the details of which have yet to be specified – is in this context good news for the sector. “We realize that we still need a little more time to continue to convince people,” concluded the president.
