Today, these are the most special buildings in Hungary – competing for a prestigious international award
Archdaily’s architecture magazine has been hosting the prestigious Building of the Year competition for 13 years, where readers can vote for their favorite building in 15 categories. This year, there are more than 4,500 applications to choose from, including a large number of Hungarians. The shortlists for the categories are already in place and the final winners will be announced on February 17th.

Cabin Moss / Béres Architect
The strange little building is located on Szabó Hill near Kőszeg. The 40 square meter cabin was designed by Béres Archtitect for a holiday purpose. The building competes simultaneously in the “best solutions”, “hospitality” and “houses” categories.
Szegzárd The Lodge / Architect Studio
The 200 square meter accommodation can be an ideal resort for those who like to relax close to nature and wine regions. The building complex in Szekszárd starts in several numbers – in the “best solutions” and “hospitality” categories.
Germany City Center / Gereben Marián Architects
The Gyermely Village Center is one of the most important elements of the small town revitalization project. The constructions are partly radical alterations and further constructions of the houses built in the 70’s, and partly small-scale interventions that fit into the fabric of the settlement – it can be read on the website of the architectural firm. The village center starts in the categories of “best solutions and” public buildings and landscape architecture “.
Face, pool, two towers and ruins / Paradigm Ariadne
The street furniture is located in Veszprém, in one of the public squares of a panel park. The oddly shaped play furniture also measures itself in two categories, “cultural buildings” and “small buildings and installations.”
Danube-Ipoly National Park Visitor Center / Architect Studio
The new visitor center of the Danube-Ipoly National Park has also started in the prestigious competition. The center opened in Pilisszentiván is made really close to nature by the wooden elements, and it also helps to integrate into the view of the village. The building starts in the “cultural buildings” category.
Lighthouse Pavilion / Grau Architects
The aim of the installation in Ipolytarnóc is to make the Slovak border village a bit more popular among tourists. The edifice, like the former, starts in the “cultural” category.
Wauhaus Cabin / Hello Wood
The Wauhaus Cabin, which is only 20 square meters, will also start in the “hospitality” category. “We retreat to a cabin raised between the foliage or standing on our feet and from the comfort of the couch we can observe the quiet forest world, listen to the rustle of leaves or immerse ourselves in the view unfolding before us from a new perspective,” the architect’s office reads live.
House of Julcsi and Andris
The home of Julcsi and Andris in Mogyoród is a 120 square meter house, about which it does not seem to offer much, but with its internal solutions it has rightly won the recognition of the international architectural profession. The building will compete for victory in the “houses” category.
House in the walnut grove / Concrete studio
“The family house, which is almost imperceptible in a walnut grove, is a rational, practical, compact home with the smallest possible floor space,” writes Octogon magazine, which also starts in the “houses” category.
White Arrow House / Théque Atelier
Unsurprisingly, the 120-square-meter residential house in Szeged will start in the “houses” category at the prestigious architecture award.
Rural Geometries Barn / Paradigm Ariadne
“The buffalo educational trail in Sándorfalvi is located next to the reed lake in Sándorfalvi in a Natura 2000 protected area. The HUF 65 million tourist investment came from a source it measures itself in the category of “industrial architecture”.
In the “Offices” category, three new buildings will be launched in Hungary: a Corvin Technology Park, the new office building of the Bánáti + Hartvig architectural firm and is the headquarters of GeoConcept in the design of the Spatial Network.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima / Robert Gutowski Architects
In the category of “religious buildings”, the pilgrimage site of the Virgin of Fátima in Alsószentiván starts from Hungary.
Multifunctional Sports Hall / Atelier dmb
Last but not least, of course, sports buildings should not be left off the list either. However, it is not a very recently handed over development starting in Hungary (such as the Puskás Arena or the MVM Dome), but the multifunctional sports hall in Újpest, which has won the recognition of international expertise.
The award for the best building of the year closes on February 9th.
