Slovakia will become one of the oldest countries in the world: Our population is aging intensely
Slovakia will gradually become one of the oldest countries in Europe and in the world. The country’s population will continue to age intensively.
This was stated for TASR by researcher Boris Vaňo working at the Demographic Research Center near Infostat. He made it clear that the aging of the population in Slovakia began in the 1980s and this is a continuing trend, the intensity of which is increasing. “By 2060, the process of population aging is irreversible, it will stop when the age structure of the population is no longer affected by strong population years born before 1985,” approached with that by 2060, the average age of the population in Slovakia will increase to at least 48 years. “Which is an increase of about six years over the present,” he added.
According to him, alleviating population aging can only increase birth rates. In this regard, we consider it important, for example, to support families with children, to reduce work and parenthood or to increase the availability of housing for a young family. In addition, measures to help mitigate the impact of population stars are also important.
“The aging of the population has serious social consequences, especially if it is very intense. The social climate is changing, society is losing momentum. Areas such as the labor market, social security and healthcare are the most affected. However, the changed requirements also require other areas, such as housing, education, infrastructure and services, “Vaňo explained.
According to the researcher, the aging of the population is not a specific feature of Slovakia. This is a global trend that is most pronounced in developed countries, where births and deaths are more intense than in less developed countries. “At the end of the 1970s, Slovakia was one of the youngest countries in Europe,” he said.
