In the US now 900,000 corona deaths, omikron leads to higher mortality, unlike in the Netherlands
The official corona death toll in the United States has risen to more than 900 thousand, the highest number worldwide. This was followed by Brazil and India, followed by 632 thousand and 502 thousand deaths. Peru has met 200 thousand deaths more than the hardest hit, the death rates per capita are twice that of the US. In the US, the omikron wave, in connection with up to the Netherlands, is leading to rapid turnout figures. Just over a quarter of the inhabitants received a booster shot, in the Netherlands that is half of the population. Every day the US now reports about 2,500 deaths, converted to population more than 17 times as many as in the Netherlands. The US omikrona seems well in sight, the infection cases have halved since mid-January and the number of hospital admissions for a few weeks too.
Global infection rates slightly lower
After a rapid increase in the last two months, fewer infections have been reported worldwide this week. The number of positive tests is still very high, more than 20 million per week. More than 11 of these infections have been reported in Europe. The settlement was mainly due to declining positive tests in North and South America. The death rates, however, do not reach record highs such as the number of infections. About 75 thousand deaths were reported worldwide in the past week, during the peak last winter there were more than 100 thousand per week.
No major outbreaks in Olympic bubble, Prime Minister Papua New Guinea positive
There is no question of staff, team officials and athletes becoming new ones at the Beijing Games every day. Ten new infections were reported on Saturday, the lowest number of new cases in more than a week. On Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony, 55 infections were detected. Since January 23, 363 people have tested positive in the Olympic village at the airport, of which 142 are athletes and team officials. One of the unlucky ones is Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape, Reuters news agency reported. On arrival in Beijing, Marape was found to be infected. The test regime is strong in Beijing: after a test on arrival at the airport, a daily pcr test. More than 70 thousand tests are carried out every day in the Olympic ‘bubble’, which is closed off from the outside world. So far, no infections have been detected in the Dutch Olympic team.
