Found in 2021 in an attic in Toulouse (Upper Garonne)a Renaissance painting was sold at auction on Friday 4 February. A museum paid 2.8 million euros.
For an exceptional painting, an exceptional sale. Friday February 4, a Renaissance painting found by chance in Toulouse (Upper Garonne), in private homes, in 2021, was auctioned at the Artpaugée auction house (Toulouse). Estimated between 600,000 and 800,000 euros, it left for 2.8 million.
It only took a few minutes for the bidding to take off. The buyer did not fall on mask but it would be an institution or a museum. Before its sale, the painting was exhibited in the Carmelite chapel.
The work represents an angel with two-tone wings who wields a censer and wears a long yellow tunic. It would be almost 500 years old. Attributed to the German painter Bernard Strigel (1460-1528)this array has a twin: another angel on display at the Louvre Abu Dhabi (Emirates United Arabs). In the 16th century, these two paintings were probably united in an altarpiece. It remains to find the work that is in the center.
