European Commissioner Breton to visit Lithuania due to situation with China
The commissioner said this on Tuesday after an informal meeting of the EU’s competitiveness council in Paris. The national broadcaster LRT was the first to announce this on Tuesday.
“We support the Lithuanian Government and business. In the coming days, they will arrive in Vilnius to talk to government and business representatives about what they have had to do and what we can do to help Lithuania, ”T. Bretonas said at the press conference.
According to him, if there is a threat to one country of the Community, so does the EU as a whole.
“When a country faces hybrid threats, whether military or economic, the EU as a whole (…) We fully support the Lithuanian Government and business,” said the European Commissioner.
The Minister of Economy and Innovation Aušrinė Armonaitė also stated at the meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council, who acquainted the ministers of industry and the internal market of the EU countries with the situation that arose due to Chinese pressure on Lithuanian business.
The meeting discusses how to reduce EU industry’s dependence on China and other third countries.
Lithuanian-Chinese relations eroded when Vilnius allowed a Taiwanese mission to operate in the country, using the island’s name in its name. Experts say the Chinese name of the mission sounds like a Taiwanese mission. Beijing sees Taiwan’s attempts to act as the state needs.
Last November, Beijing officially downgraded diplomatic representation with Lithuania before the trustees. As the diplomatic conflict developed, Lithuanian businessmen reported experiencing various restrictions on trade with China. National policies have called them unannounced sanctions.
