one month of work to equip the right bank hoppers with automatic barriers
From this Monday, January 31, 2022, automatic barriers and video surveillance cameras will be installed on the hoppers of the right bank quays in Rouen. The work will last until February 24, 2022. During this period, the hoppers will be closed during the day on weekdays.
This new equipment should allow more fluidity and safety in the event of an incident on the hoppers. These passages are often affected by traffic jams but also by accidents involving vehicles that are too bulky to enter below the hoppers. Thanks to the new equipment, the central traffic control station of the metropolis (PCRT) will be able to control their openings/closings. Every year, tourists get tricked and damage their vehicles. Sometimes it is moving vans rented by individuals that end up embedded under the hoppers.
Installation work on the hoppers of the right bank quays of Rouen (Belges, Boieldieu and Corneille) will take place during the month of February and will cause the hoppers to be closed during the day and at night in order to limit the inconvenience caused to traffic as much as possible.
It is often necessary to close one or more hoppers following accidents, for maintenance, due to flooding… Thus, for the realization of a maintenance site, Closing the hoppers lasts about an hour longer than the site itself.
In addition, for safety reasons, it is often necessary to close all the hoppers even when the intervention concerns only one. “For example, when working on the Boulevard des Belges hopper, it is necessary to close the Boieldieu and Corneille hoppers to prevent a pile-up from occurring in the event of lines rising in the Boieldieu hopper. specifies the Metropolis in its press release.
With the implementation of this new system, the upstream hoppers will only be closed in the event of a confirmed blockage. The new system will be reinforced by an automatic accident detection system. This system will automatically detect a malfunction (vehicle stopped in the hoppers, presence of pedestrians, oversized vehicles, etc.) to close the hoppers as soon as possible and avoid an accident or secondary accident and thus limit the closing time.
During this period, the hoppers will be closed during the day on weekdays. The closure will begin after morning rush hour (9:30 a.m.) and end before evening rush hour (3:30 p.m.). The work to be carried out has little risk of overflowing these time slots. From February 14 to 18, night closures are also applied (between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.). In the event of site contingencies, the delay will be made up for by night work.
