National team against Cape Verde and Faroe Islands – Liechtenstein
SCHAAN – For the Liechtenstein national team, the international game year 2022 begins with two friendlies in southern Spain. On March 25, the team of national coach Martin Stocklasa missed each other first with Africa Cup of Sixteen finalists Cape Verde, four days later on March 29 with the Faroe Islands (“Volksblatt” reported).
As welcome preparation for the third edition of the UEFA Nations League, which begins in June, the Liechtenstein national team will play two international matches against Cape Verde and the Faroe Islands at the end of March. However, the showdown with the two island nations will not take place in Marbella, as initially planned, but in the “Pinatar Arena” football complex near the southern Spanish city of Murcia.
Cape Verde, which was the youngest to play in the Africa Cup and where a World Cup participant Senegal failed in the round of 16, is currently number 73 in the FIFA world rankings and will be a new opponent in international history for Liechtenstein. As little can be said about the first encounter with the Africans. After all, the very good world ranking position of the country with around 550,000 inhabitants indicates that the team of national coach Martin Stocklasa has to deal with a strong opponent. Far more is known in the Liechtenstein camp about the other opponent. Six attempts have already been made to hold their own against the Faroe Islands, but the current number 123 in the FIFA rankings has always proved too strong, resulting in all matches being lost so far.
Both Cape Verde and the Faroe Islands, like Liechtenstein, are considered small footballing nations, which is why the games in southern Spain are ideal for preparing for the UEFA Nations League, where comparable sizes will then await the team of national coach Martin Stocklasa.
