Storm Malik pulls up trees and overturns cranes in Sweden
At least one person died, streets were flooded and thousands were left without electricity when storm Malik moved across Scandinavia this weekend, according to authorities and non-profit authorities. In central Denmark, a 78-year-old woman died after opening a stable door from the inside, which then got stuck in the strong winds. Meteorological services in Sweden and Denmark warned of high water levels and floods and reported hurricane winds during the night. The 7.8 kilometer long Öresund Bridge that connects Denmark and Sweden had to be closed to traffic on Saturday evening and remained closed until Sunday morning. The Swedish Transport Administration also advised against unnecessary travel during the weekend due to shot down trees and objects blowing in the wind and rescue services around Sweden and Denmark reported hundreds of emergencies. In Malmö in southern Sweden, the rescue service warned people on Sunday to stay away from the city’s recognizable skyscraper Turning Torso as parts of the building had come loose due to the strong winds and risked falling to the ground. Video from the site also showed that trees were uprooted and a construction crane tipped over and destroyed a small hut when the counterweight slammed through the road.
