Storm Malik in northern Europe leaves at least four dead
HELSINKI – A severe winter storm swept through northern Europe over the weekend, killing at least four people, destroying houses and cars, closing bridges and causing floods and stopping transports while leaving thousands of households without electricity.
Storm Malik swept through the Nordic region on Sunday, with strong wind gusts and extensive rain and snowfall in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
Malik reached the Nordic countries and northern Germany late last Saturday after moving in from Britain where it caused chaos with material damage and transport chaos, which hit Scotland particularly hard.
In Scotland, a boy and a 60-year-old woman were killed on Saturday by falling trees when strong winds hit the northern parts of Britain.
Wind gusts of more than 160 km / h have been reported in parts of Scotland, which has caused extensive transport disruptions and power outages to tens of thousands of homes.
Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon warned that another storm that would hit the region on Sunday could be “more severe for parts of Scotland” than expected.
In Denmark, too strong winds with heavy rain caused the temporary closure of several bridges on Saturday, including the important Öresundsvägen and the railway bridge that connects Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmö.
Danish media reported that a 78-year-old woman died of serious injuries after falling in a strong wind. In neighboring Germany, local media reported that a man was killed on Saturday after being hit by a sign detached from the storm.
Floods in many parts of Denmark caused significant material damage. Several traffic accidents caused by falling trees and flying debris were reported to the police.
Southern parts of Sweden were also hit hard and thousands of households were without electricity on Sunday afternoon. Ferries to the Baltic island Gotland were canceled due to strong winds.
Serious damage to, among other things, houses, cars and boats was reported in Norway, while heavy snowfall throughout Finland caused road accidents and disrupted bus and train traffic in parts of the country.
