Philippe Lemm Trio is coming to the Netherlands
Amstelveen – The Amstelveen drummer Philippe Lemm will come to the Netherlands in February with his New York trio. The trio played on international stages such as the Blue Note, Ronnie Scott’s, the Concertgebouw and North Sea Jazz. Philippe is looking forward to performing in the Netherlands again for 2.5 years.
Philippe grew up in Amstelveen and has been making music from an early age. ‘I make a lot of noise with pots and pans. Drumming is great for me, only that was not really an option in our overview house in Keizer Karelpark. When I was 16 I really started playing drums and it soon became clear that I wanted to do this. And if I was lucky, I could go into the music room during my break at Keizer Karel College.’
Jazz and improvisation
In 2009 he started at the Conservatory in Amsterdam and then at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he became the first Dutch drummer to obtain a master’s degree. This is where the famous trio originated. The trio’s music is described as subtle, powerful and idiosyncratic. Jazz and improvisation form the basis, but rock and classical music are just as influential.
First steps
‘In 2016 our debut album New Amsterdam was released, a mix of our own pieces and a number of jazz standards. And in 2019 our second album City Birds for which New York with all its subcultures was the source of inspiration. In 2021 we have our third album called ‘First Steps’ and shows how ten years of collaboration and performances have led to a penetrating, dynamic and unique sound. The album is also a tribute to our pianist Angelo Di Loreto, who passed away unexpectedly in October 2020. His playing and compositions were an essential part of the identity and sound of the trio.’
bimhuis
Around the release of the third album, Reed found several concerts in Florida and New York. Nevertheless, Philippe is looking forward to the performances in Europe. ‘From February we will be performing on various beautiful stages in the Netherlands, including the Bimhuis in Amsterdam on 6 February.’ Philippe can’t wait to be able to perform in the Netherlands again for 2.5 years and to perform his new music.
