The history of the Eucharist is long and tangled, but what the band managed to do in the 90’s has rightly remained legendary. The Swedish Communion, which was originally formed in 1989 and then underwent various stops and starts during the next decade before their dissolution in 1998, made its name first in the subway in 1992 with its self-titled demo before the central Greeting Immortality EP on the cult Obscure Plasma label, which would become the influential Avantgarde Music.
But even this enviable performance was practically flooded with the band’s debut album, A Velvet Creation, 1993. A stone-cold classic, A Velvet Creation, greatly helped usher in the melodic death metal era; although it was by no means the first “melodic” death metal record, it was undoubtedly the best of that era, maintaining a sincerity and melancholy that fully befits its title.
With these stops and beginning to wreak havoc within the band, the Eucharist would appear four long years later with an equally monolithic album and yet a completely different one from the first: Mirrorworlds. As evidenced by its title and cover art, Mirrorworlds was a fascinating experience, which took the band into a more modern territory (which they helped pioneer in the first place) and displayed a dizzying and dazzling prog-death attitude that thankfully still were mature with their characteristics. melancholy.
In the years following their original dissolution, the Eucharistic cult continued to become more feverish with each generation of metals that followed, with Regain Records re-releases of both in the early 2000s helping to do so. Still, the name was actually dead … until 2016, and the roots of their reunion album, I Am The Void, were planted.
Founding singer / guitarist Markus Johnsson takes up the story: “A reunion gig in Varberg, Sweden led to me and Daniel [Erlandsson, original drummer] decides to make a new album. We wanted to change the style to a darker atmosphere, both lyrically and musically – something I always wanted. Daniel eventually found out that his interest was elsewhere and wanted to get out of the project, and by that time the album was more or less recorded. I had written all the lyrics this time and also made all the music except for a couple of riffs that were Daniels, but Daniel had helped with some of the song structures. “
Truth be told, I Am The Void is a decidedly darker version of the Eucharist – and a blackened to a sharp one. While the dead metal muscle of yesteryear remains, the leather-winged ghost of black metal looms over I Am The Void, giving a familiar-but alien aspect to the Eucharist’s characteristic sound. In another way, this literally huge new record (12 songs in 77 minutes!) Is almost a complete makeover of the Eucharist, but as captivating and dynamic as their beloved 90s work.
And one not without further struggles, as Markus continues: “The record was buried under dust and anxiety for a few years – from the beginning of 2016 to December 2020. But I got together and sent the whole album to Per Gyllenbäck from Regain Records at the end of 2019 A year of silence passed, and in December 2020 Per contacted me and said ‘Let’s make this album!’ We were both ready, and that day I decided that I wanted to run this race on my own from now on, I realized that I had always been the main creative force in communion with Daniel, so I could not see “Some problems with continuing the race alone. Daniel also said that if I wanted I could always use the band name and release the album myself. So I continued with that.”
Johnsson is joined on the new album by Marduk’s drummer Simon “Bloodhammer” Schilling, who is hereby considered an official member of the Eucharist. “I will do everything on my own from now on and in my own style. I want to make music and record albums, and I will do that as long as someone will let go of the stuff because I’m on a creative streak now. “
Again, really spoken, and the next (hopefully epic) chapter of the Eucharist is about to be revealed. The abyss can take many forms, and so does it for I Am The Void.
