Dutch dominate opening day of Speed Skating Junior World Championships in Innsbruck

For the third time after 1982 and 2007, Innsbruck is the venue of the ISU Junior World Championships and the opening day of the three-day events war festival in hand of the Dutch runners.
Because in all four competitions, the gold medal for the juniors went to the top European nation in this sport. There were some notable successes for Austria’s young team, so the only 15-year-old Jeannine Rosner finished 20th over 1,500 meters and the 16-year-old Alexander Farthofer qualified for the mass start final, which is scheduled for Sunday.
In the junior women’s 500 meters, the favorite, Pien Smit from the Netherlands, won by a tenth ahead of Yukino Yoshida from Japan. Bronze went to Germany and Sophie Warmuth. Rosner from Innsbruck finished her first appearance at the World Championships in 37th place. “It was a good race for me, but I was particularly satisfied today with the result over 1,500 meters,” explained the 15-year-old young athlete from Tyrol. Because there she placed 20th: “It’s great to be in the top 20 at my first World Championships. Because there are still four junior years ahead of me and being so far up the field makes me want more.”
Over these distances, Jade Groenewoud led a Dutch treble, with Evelien Vijn and Chloe Hoogendoorn completing the podium. The Netherlands were also the men’s team of the day. Joep Wennemars prevented a Spanish triumph in the 500m after intercepting Nil Llop in the final meters. Japan’s Yuta Hirose took bronze. Farthofer ended up 38th, 2.45 seconds behind. Tim Prins won the 1.500 meter competition ahead of Wennemars, who leads the all-round ranking, the four-way battle consisting of the four individual distances at this World Championships. Third was the Norwegian Emil Pedersen Matre.
For the mass start on Sunday, the semi-finals are still waiting on Friday evening, where four red-white-red athletes fought for a possible ticket to the final: Farthofer, Rosner, Tobias Wolf from Styria and Hanna Müller from Carinthia. In the end, Farthofer was the only Austrian to make it into the final field. “It was a good first day of competition for me. I felt very comfortable on the ice and I’m particularly happy about making it into the mass start finals,” says the Wörgler, who, like all local athletes, is taking part in the junior world championships for the first time.
Rosner and Wolf, who finished ninth in their heats, just missed the mass start final. Only the top 8 advance to the final. Carinthian Müller failed in eleventh place in her preliminary run. On Saturday the competitions over 1,000 meters as well as 3,000 for the juniors and 5,000 for the juniors await. The competitions start at 10:00 am. Due to the current corona restrictions, no spectators are allowed. The races can be followed live via streamster.tv.
