SALZBURG MUSEUM: News from Auschwitz
News from Auschwitz
01/27/22 On January 27, 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The digital guest book of Auschwitz is now freely accessible in a terminal in the Salzburg Museum.
The Auschwitz concentration camp is “far away”. For many, the thought of taking responsibility for what happened a long (?) time ago is still far away. A visit to the Auschwitz Memorial changes people. The guest book there allows you to process what you have seen. Now the digital guest book in Auschwitz, Poland can also be viewed on a computer in the local Salzburg Museum: The Salzburg Museum is showing “News from Auschwitz” as part of a joint project with the National Fund of the Republic of Austria.
The new Austria exhibition “Distance – Austria and Auschwitz” was opened in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on October 4, 2021. Many countries organize their “country exhibition” there. The predecessor of the current Austria exhibition dates from the late 1970s, and the theses presented there of “Austria as the first victim” of Nazi Germany attracted increasing criticism. The current country exhibition now shows “a wide-ranging picture of the participation and concern of people from Austria”. There is a guest book on a computer terminal in the memorial where visitors can write down and process their impressions. This virtual guest book is now also being made temporarily accessible at various Austrian locations. The Salzburg Museum was chosen as the first location for this by the exhibition team.
