We managed it without any conditions, straight from the heart. And we hope to portray a liberation from unhealthy norms and a right to rule over your own body, your sexuality and your faith. ”
Clara Solathe debut film by a Swedish-born director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén, of Costa Rican descent, portrays an introverted woman and her reluctant role as a religious healer. This truly international co-production premiered during Directors’ Fornight of the Cannes International Film Festival 2021 and has since had a rich festival run and was also selected as Costa Rica’s Oscar contribution. At the Swedish Guldbagge Awards on Monday, it received five wins – for best sound, best film, best screenplay, best direction and best film – which made it the evening’s grand champion.

A more distinct national issue, Hannes Holms A Christmas Story, took home two acting awards and the award for best scenography. Based on a television cartoon from 1975, seen by millions of Swedes every Christmas Eve since then, it shows a Robin Hood-admiring teenager who steals packages from rich citizens and distributes them to the poor. While it was shown on British television in the 1980s as Christopher’s Christmas mission (narrated by Bernard Cribbins), this new live-action feature has not yet been released outside the Nordics.
