Tolisso is recommended for a new contract with FC Bayern Munich

- Corentin Tolisso seemed to have no future at Bayern Munich due to his injury susceptibility, but is now developing into a top performer.
- The French midfielder’s contract ends after this season.
- Julian Nagelsmann is happy about his strong performance against Hertha BSC and his qualities and should wish for further cooperation.
Half a year before the end of the contract, FC Bayern Munich gets the Corentin Tolisso they always wanted. The French midfielder is thriving under coach Julian Nagelsmann.
In the 4-1 win against Hertha BSC, he even proved to be a header threat. The central midfielder heads the ball into the goal twice. His first goal in the 2nd minute was disallowed for offside, but the goal in the 25th minute to make it 1-0 initiated the 4-1 triumph.
The Frenchman had already scored a goal the week before, in the 4-0 win over 1. FC Köln. Tolisso seems to have the agonizingly long phase of the unexpected goal danger over wounds. In the three Bundesliga seasons before that he only scored one goal.
Nagelsmann praises: “A dangerous midfielder”
How can the sudden upswing of the 27-year-old be explained? “He didn’t have an easy first half of the season, had a few reconnaissances and was away for a while,” explained coach Julian Nagelsmann when asked by our editors.
Since overcoming his injury problems, however, Tolisso has “done his job very, very well. Today he played on the ten (attacking midfield, ed.). He is a very, very dangerous midfielder, that’s what he was before FC Bayern. He has a good feeling for going into the box. Especially when the opponent is deep, it’s important to run into the box. He played well again.”
In fact, there was already a phase in Tolisso’s career when he shone with his finishing qualities. In the 2016/2017 season, his last season with France’s Olympique Lyon, he recorded eight goals and five assists in 31 league games.
The fourth most expensive Bayern player of all time
He then switched to the German record champions in the summer of 2017 for a fee of 41.5 million euros. To date, it is the fourth most expensive Bayern transfer of all time after Lucas Hernandez (80 million euros), Leroy Sane (60 million euros) and Dayot Upamecano (42.5 million euros).
In his first season at Bayern, Tolisso actually seemed to be worth the money. Also because of his goal risk: he scored six goals in the Bundesliga and three goals in the Champions League.
Injury problems as a constant companion
What then followed, however, was recurring bad luck with injuries: a cruciate ligament tear, a tendon tear, an ankle operation, infections with the corona virus – to name just a few examples. Tolisso could no longer find his rhythm.
In terms of play, Nagelsmann thinks a lot of the midfielder: “He has excellent qualities. He’s incredibly secure with the ball, isn’t afraid in any situation and always wants to have the ball and has good physicality. He’s a decent machine in a tackle and can win a lot of balls.”
The problem: His contract ends after this season. While at times it seemed like a split would be the best solution for both sides, this may have changed with Tolisso’s improvement in form. “The contract situation is known. I can’t comment on anything else,” said Nagelsmann.
However, his desire for Tolisso to remain seems obvious.
