21 Salzburg at the Olympics through a last-minute nomination
Brennsteiner was not originally nominated by the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC). Due to the controversial quota regulation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Ski Federation (FIS), he was initially not given a place in the alpine team. But then the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) was subsequently awarded two quota places by the IOC and FIS – and Brennsteiner slipped down.
ÖSV sports director Toni Giger reacted mildly to this solution: “This decision corresponds to fairness for the athletes concerned. That’s a good thing. That would have been extremely bitter if there hadn’t been any regulation – from my point of view it would have been a scandal. Thank goodness that didn’t happen and he’s over there showing what he’s capable of.”

Fifth Olympic participation for snowboarder Prommegger
Alpine snowboarder Andreas Prommegger will be at the Winter Olympics for the fifth time in February. “Olympia, only the best go there, and I can experience my fifth game there – that’s very special, makes me proud. I will enjoy it to the fullest as much as I can,” the Schwarzach native told the Austria Press Agency. At 41, Prommegger is the oldest participant to travel to Beijing for Austria.
At the same time, Salzburg also has the youngest Austrian Olympic participant, ski freestyler Matej Svancer – he is 17 years old. Altogether, Salzburg will be represented by 20 athletes at the Winter Games in Beijing – including, for example, the biathlete Simon Eder (this is his fourth Games), the Nordic combined athlete Mario Seidl and the ski racer Mirjam Puchner.
