Zoo must euthanize implementation of Puma
animals
The Salzburg Zoo team mourns Austria’s use of Puma. Four months before his 21st birthday, the very old big cat “Yagul” had to be put to sleep on Friday. “Several health problems came together in the elderly puma,” says zoo director Sabine Grebner.
Yagul would have turned 21 this May, but unfortunately he didn’t make it, says Grebner. Due to its age, the puma was already in a very poor general condition and therefore had to be put down on Friday morning.
Above all, the animal keepers, who had to deal with the venerable puma on a daily basis, mourn the zoo resident, who has lived in Salzburg for more than 19 years. Born on May 8, 2001 in the Wroclaw Zoological Garden (Poland), the tomcat spent most of his life with the Puma cat “Winnie”, who, however, died in 2019.
14 young Puma fathered in Salzburg
Between 2003 and 2013, the Salzburg Puma couple had a total of eight successful offspring. Most recently, on December 24, 2013, tomcat Maxxum was born, who now lives in a zoo in Germany. According to the Salzburg big cat keepers, the oldest puma in the world to date has just turned 30 years old.
Unusual 20th birthday present
For his 20th birthday, the cougar tomcat received a colorful box “cake” with 20 chicken necks from his keepers. Because the cougar had a penchant for spices, garnished all over with his favorite scent of cinnamon powder.
