“In Portugal, there is no courage. Good works are not valued”
ANDManuel Simões, former leader of Santa Clara, outlined, in an exclusive interview with Sports by the Minute, which is the current panorama of Portuguese football, highlighting the increasing distance between the biggest clubs in Portuguese football and the rest.
In addition to analyzing the passage through Santa Clara, the coach also made a greater bet on, highlighting that clubs have to look more often to look at the lower championships in Portugal, instead of going ‘fishing’ abroad.
Emanuel Simões also highlights the enormous quality that exists, both in Portuguese coaches and in national players, asking for football that is in line with these values.
Portuguese football, in my opinion, has a growing gapThere are many good players in Portugal who can make these better players, as is the case with Morita at Santa Clara…
Managers have this ability to deal with fan criticism. In football, there are no irreplaceables. Players leave, clubs continue to win. The important thing is the collective and the message it conveys. As long as people don’t realize this, we will continue at this level. Portuguese football, in my opinion, has a growing gap. Two clubs have approached, but the gap between the top five and the rest continues to grow. It is time to balance this much more and only balanced so that we can buy well, sell better and invest in everything, such as better training conditions, better coaches and players. But to invest you need to have money and, therefore, sell.
And to have that money, we need to monetize the players we have. Ajax is a good proof of that, as well as Barcelona a few years ago. In Portugal, we have to lose the idea of constantly shopping abroad. We have the best players in the world at all levels, the best coaches in the world, the best coaches in the world and why don’t we have the best football in the world? We think the same, and these are the issues that lead to projects being interrupted and do not occur since there are many times that a lot of thought is given to the moment and the result.
And Portugal has more and more football countries to promote this bet on training…
We have more countries for football than we have, and if we want to invest so much in training, why don’t we do it like other countries, where in the League there must necessarily be a high number of players up to a certain age? Why do we have to have the under-23 championship, teams B, I Liga, II Liga, Liga 3, Portuguese Championship and all the districts? Why don’t we find a way to promote our product? I cannot understand this…
It’s never too late for an opportunityWe have more and more cases of coaches rising from lower divisions to the top of English football…
In my 12 years of eating, I went through all levels of districts, made the National Seniors Championship [agora Campeonato de Portugal], II League and I arrived at I League as a manager. I have a perfect sense and knowledge that there is below the top of Portuguese football. I was at Vizela a few years ago, and I have this news, saved in my drafts, which came out in a relevant newspaper before the game with Sporting for the round of 16 of the Cup and which said ‘team of old and dismissed makes sense ‘ . And it really was a piece of equipment that I managed to make at the time. I had players aged 38 and 39 to play with without any problem.
My 36-year-old goalkeeper said that season was the best of his career. What I mean by this is that it is never too late for an opportunity, but above all, to have the courage to bet on what is possible. And that’s not why it will have less quality. At that time, we went to the ascent phase, but we failed. Nobody gave us questions for us, but a fabulous time. At Merelinense, last year, we wouldn’t have gone the same way, and the most expensive player would win 500 euros. We did the sparkle that no one thought we were going to the ascension phase. We were at one point of the ascent. I am often indignant because there is no courage to work. And, in Portugal, good works are not valued, just as there are players who are not valued.Young people from Santa Clara have to compete in something more demanding than the current oneDoes Santa Clara have, in training, which young people can bet on and, later, sell?
I think it does, but you have to change the model. Santa Clara is in the context of the rest of Portuguese football, which is the issue of the island. In Madeira, there are many more clubs than in the Azores. Santa Clara has a difficulty in terms of will if they want to play trained games or observe. There are no athletes of the same level or level, they are very far away. The level is very far between the I Liga and the Portuguese Championship. The club’s leaders have to think of a concerted strategy with the rest of the Azores. After having been there tires all the same. If they come up with a joint strategy, the other clubs will also win because they will become stronger, and Santa Clara will become stronger.
For me, the best players in the Santa Clara youth team have to start playing in the juniors and against the players in that squad. I’m against the burnt context, but, there are no island steps, have to be burnt steps to be mandatory in a faster way to harden and grow faster. And the juniors have to play in the district because they don’t have anyone to play against. With this, the best Santa Clara players will be the best other clubs, those teams will grow more and everyone will grow more. And, at the end of the training stage, the players will give even more to Santa Clara. At their level, Santa Clara’s athletes will arrive 14-0 or 15-0 and not learn anything, and they will get to a point where they won’t know how to deal with disappointment. They have to compete in something more demanding than the current one.
And what are the projects for the coming weeks?
My goal is to get back to work within the four lines as soon as possible, but I’m not obsessed with that. What will happen to me in the near future is to start looking at the players and equipment, but it won’t show me to the teams. I like having a list of players and watching them play. There are players who have already identified in InStat, I liked it and now I want to see them live. I don’t know where I’m going to have knowledge, or what I’ll be in the next few times, but, and I think I’ll be able to lose weight again, be prepared to, when I get to that project, have that of any division and any type of player that I lost a little bit. while I was admin. I’ve been watching players from another level, and I like watching young people and players from below.
