New speed control radars just around the corner…
It is no longer news that Portugal will have more speed control radars. However, according to the Secretary of State for Internal Administration, the 50 new speed cameras, which will be controlled by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), will come into operation by the end of March.
With the new radars, Portugal now has 110 fixed speed control posts.
According to a Secretary of State, the contract for the National Speed Control System (SINCRO) has already been signed, installed or processed and implemented at this point. This radar system, which will be installed in 50 locations, will join the first SINCRO in the country in 2016, with 110 speed checkpoints.
Lusa Patrícia Gaspar, Secretary of State for Internal Administration “Our objective is that, by the end of the first quarter of this year, we have reached the new 50 operational radars”.
Patrícia can advance in the trajectory of 30 of the 50 radars that allow the detection of instantaneous speed and 20 are calculated for the average speed at a given moment, which is a novelty in relation to the current SINCRO.
How do radars that calculate average speed work?
How the new speed cameras work is simple. At a first point, the registration and time of passage is registered and then another radar, at another point it does exactly the same record. Based on the time, it is the calculation of the time taken to travel the route as well as the average speed.
If an infringement is detected, the vehicle's information is sent to a control centre.
In transit Portugal, ANSR is responsible for approving the equipment that can be used.
The Secretary of State highlighted the importance of SINCRO, stressing that studies carried out in recent times have detected long speed control radars, show that at these points there is “a reduction in accidents, deaths and serious injuries”
According to the provisional reports presented, the 28,868 indicators marked today in the year resulted in 389 deaths, 2,093 serious injuries and 33,812 more injuries, an increase in all data compared to 2019, an increase of 220, with the exception of previous victims .
