The discrepancy between the two calendars – Julian (“old style”) and Gregorian – (“new style”) is 13 days, so the New Year according to the old style comes on the night of January 13-14.
“The tradition of celebrating the old New Year from 13 to 14 January worries over 60% of the population of Belarus,” cultural experts told Sputnik.
According to them, on this day people of different faiths sit down at the festive table on this night.
“After all, the old New Year never falls on the Orthodox fast, as it happens with the usual New Year,” said the agency’s interlocutor.

Practice shows that there is an old New Year at work in tech companies, at the end of December it is a hot season.
Generous carols
Ethnographers recalled that the old New Year is the time of Christmas carols, when they prepared rich, generous canteen kutya.
“On the tables were served sausages, such a popular yummy as saltisons. A must have was hot, straight from the oven, rich mushroom soup on barley. Sauerkraut and pickled cucumbers were brought from the cellars,” the ethnographers said.
On the old New Year, which fell on the carol, it was customary to put up and forgive old grievances.
In addition, to this day, in various regions of Belarus, ancient carol rites have been preserved, when people dress up in various totem animals and walk around the courtyards. These traditions are carried with pagan beliefs about the future harvest.
There is a belief that carols should not be allowed into the house, but should be presented on the doorstep, but in no case should they be allowed in without refreshments.
“Even if you throw a piece of sausage at the bag, such is the state among the people, because it is believed that if you release the feller without prasmakau, the whole year will be unhappy,” the ethnographers said.
