Innsbruck University of Applied Sciences: Passenger numbers at a weak level in 2021 »News | top
The year 2021 was marked by the total failure of the winter season for Innsbruck Airport.
In the entire first half of the year, only around 15,000 passengers were counted, normally this would be a number on a good winter Saturday. The summer months were much more positive. The holiday offers from Innsbruck during this period were very well received by Tyroleans but also by passengers from the respective regions, and the number of passengers was better than in the summer of the previous year.
In the autumn, the four-week runway closure, which was necessary for the general renovation of the runway, and then the renewed lockdown slowed down the development of passenger numbers again significantly.
With the start of the winter season in mid-December, however, an upswing could be recorded towards the end of the year, and December 2021 was by far the month with the highest number of passengers in the year as a whole. As a result, a total of 125,495 annual passengers and 2,010 flight movements in scheduled and charter traffic were recorded in 2021.
Massive decrease in the number of passengers
The annual result for the number of passengers corresponds to a minus of almost 90% compared to 2019: “After the failure of the winter season, it was already clear at the beginning of the year that this would be a very difficult year. I am all the more excited that, after the successful refurbishment of the slopes in autumn, the start of this year’s winter season went better than expected. That gives hope for further development, ”says airport manager Marco Pernetta.
Around 10,000 passengers were handled at the airport on the first weekend in January. The airport is now placing great hopes in the two main months of February and March.
Optimistic outlook for the summer
Nevertheless, Pernetta is looking ahead to the coming months: “With all the major challenges and uncertainties, we remain optimistic that the airport will soon recover. The desire to travel is unbroken, people want to go on vacation. “
So the 2022 summer flight program from Innsbruck will again be offering numerous holiday destinations in the Mediterranean: Sardinia, Calabria, Brac, Mallorca and the top Greek destinations Chalkidiki, Crete, Kalamata, Kavala (NEW), Kefalonia, Kos, Preveza / Lefkas and Rhodes.
In scheduled services, the highlight is clearly the reintroduction of the year-round Frankfurt route, which will be operated three times a day by Air Dolomiti (subsidiary of Lufthansa) from May 2nd. International and intercontinental connections are then possible again with the connection to one of the aviation hubs in Europe.
In addition to the year-round connections to Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Vienna, direct line connections to Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Helsinki can be booked in the summer of 2022. (Red)
