Comment: 1972 Olympics in Munich: Please don’t just remember the attack
Eleven Israelis and a police officer died in the Olympic attack 50 years ago in Munich. Even so, remembering the games shouldn’t just focus on the attack.
Cheerful they should die from Olympic competitions Munich 1972. They went down in history as tragic games. Eleven Israelis and a police officer died in the Olympic attack. Even so, 50 years later, the memory of the Games should not be focused solely on the attack. This would do the Palestinian terrorists of yesteryear a favor – and all terror-based regimes of today. One would give the impression that violence and methods of horror can wipe out all peace movements. So it’s not.
1972 Olympics in Munich: Nobody will ever forget the victims
Yes, the families of the victims are still suffering today. You can’t find anything cheerful in the games. They want the anniversary to be dedicated to the memory of their dead. That is humanly understandable, but the wrong signal to the world. Munich wanted to show a new face in 1972. To break away from the National Socialist-Volkish spirit of the 1936 Games. The city wanted to prove: With the athletes from all nations, cosmopolitanism is coming back to Germany. Holding up that flag is as important as commemoration. Both have their place in the city’s plans. And no one will ever forget the victims. Because a democracy does not write its history books one-sided – in contrast to dictatorships and terrorists.
