Half of Europeans are soon infected with Omicron – WHO
The World Health Organization warns that half of Europe’s population is infected with the Omicron virus over the next six to eight weeks.
According to Dr. Hans Kluge, the Omicron wave is rolling the region from west to east – in addition to another version of Delta, which came earlier.
The WHO forecast is based on data on seven million new cases registered in Europe in the first week of 2022.
In two weeks, the number of infected has more than doubled.
Dr. Kluge quoted the Institute for Health Measurement and Evaluation in Seattle as saying. According to them, “more than 50% of the region’s population will be infected with Omicron within the next six to eight weeks.”
Recent studies show that Omicron is less likely to cause serious illness than previous Covid variants. But this option is highly contagious, it can be infected and fully vaccinated people.
A record number of people infected with it are putting serious pressure on the country’s health care system.
In France, the number of hospitalized on Monday rose to almost 23,000. This is the most noticeable increase since April 2021.
The total number of victims of coronavirus in Poland exceeded 100 thousand people. The country now ranks sixth in the world in terms of mortality from Covid-19.
In Ukraine, a sharp increase in coronavirus infections has not yet been recorded.
However, the chief sanitary doctor of Ukraine Igor Kuzin warned: a new wave is near.
“We have not yet seen an assessment of the epidemiological situation. Rather, the post-holiday period is triggered, when people postponed the trip to the doctor … According to our forecasts, the next surge will be from the end of January. .
