SBB want to expand the Lausanne-Geneva railway line
The SBB have put the construction of a third track between Morges VD and Lonay VD out to tender. This is intended to remove a bottleneck on the Lausanne-Geneva route.
The Léman 2030 program aims to double capacity on the Lausanne-Geneva line by 2035, as the SBB wrote on Monday in response to the project tender. With this in mind, the construction of the 2.5 km long new track section between Morges and Lona would make it possible to overcome a bottleneck and make the transport of people and goods more fluid.
16 additional points are also to be laid so that freight trains can enter the Lausanne-Triage station without obstructing the passenger trains.
Construction works last from 2024 to 2031
The construction of the third track requires a redesign of the Lonay-Préverenges and Morges-St-Jean stations. These should also be handicapped accessible so that low-floor trains can be used. A modernization of the existing infrastructure is also planned.
According to the SBB, solutions could be found with the residents and the municipalities, dying without the demolition of houses and reducing dying during the construction work to a minimum.
Work is expected to begin in early 2024 and be completed by 2031. The costs are put at 150 million francs.
