“Controlled rupture of the current firefighters paradigm” and “an autonomous operational command of firefighters”. These are the priorities of the new leadership of the Portuguese Firemen League, led by António Nunes, who this Saturday took office for a term of four years.“Firefighters are currently in a situation that is not acceptable, both for operatives and for humanitarian associations. The first major challenge is the Autonomous Operational Command of Firefighters”, explains the responsible, elaborating that “this team of 29 people is fully aware that achievements will be slow, but as our aspirational goals, we are sure that we are on the right path ”.
For António Nunes, “we are at the right time to return firefighters to their proper place as the first intervener in forest fire fighting actions and safeguard complementary aid options for the operational reinforcement of major events”. “We agree that the State has civil protection reserve units, which can be from the Armed Forces or any other civil protection agent. But they are reserve units and not replacement units or competition with the firefighters”, he points out, in a clear warning to the Civil Protection and GNR structures that gained weight after the Pedrógão tragedy in 2017.
